Features...

Some of the features of 'WebEdit' and thoughts for the future.

Security

Built using PHP and MySQL, the most popular marriage on the Internet today, ‘WebEdit’ CMS provides a secure and easy to use management system for creating and amending web content on your website.

Utilising  ‘User Level management’, user access permission can be controlled simply and effectively through the Users option.  User groups are currently set as ‘Author’, ‘Editor’ or ‘Administrator’ in the current version, although there are plans for this to be fully dynamic in time.

All significant actions are logged.  This provides a quick and easy view over all users’ activity in the CMS.  There are plans to improve this in the next version to allow easier filtering of results and easier visibility of Success/Failure/Notification actions at a glance.

Complete database backups run automatically, and also on demand.

Speed

The CMS [purposely] does not use a JavaScript library.  The intention for this was to reduce overhead, page loading times and make the editing process as simple as possible.  This is due to change in future versions as the huge advantages that JavaScript libraries can offer in terms of User Experience outweigh any overhead and code complexity that they bring.

Minimal use if images, re-use of images, image ‘sprites’ and CSS effects are some of the ways that we have also sought to reduce overheads and increase page loading speeds.  “Keep the fancy graphics for the front end.”

Simple Interface

‘WebEdit’ has a simple layout that lends itself to be easily extended.  Taking guidance from OO and Framework principles, layout and actions and kept as far apart as possible.  This makes altering and extending the code base far simpler.

Form validation is handled in a single separate file, called in the same way by each and every form.

Multiple tabs, one update.  This option is new in Version 2.  Multiple tabs makes switching between options for the same record immediate, and the single update prevents the possibility of losing data on one tab, while updating another.  Plans in the next version for a totally new updating mechanism will improve this even more.

Help is always on hand.  Context-sensitive help is available on each page of ‘WebEdit’, and can be altered specifically (by certain groups) as required.

SEO ready

SEO used to be buzz-word in web-development, now its standard practice.  ‘WebEdit’ by default (and design) is SEO ready.  URL strings are created automatically, or can be manipulated to suit if required.  Any alterations will also cascade through sub-pages, preventing lost links and broken pages.

Search Engine Sitemaps are a road-map for search engines.  ‘WebEdit’ produces fully  XML compliant sitemaps dynamically on demand, tailored specifically for search engines like Google, MSN & YaHoo.

In the future

Lots of changes are in the pipeline for the future, including:

  • Mobile version
  • AJaX updating
  • Additional modules (Subscriptions, FAQ’s, Portfolio)
  • ..and a host of smaller updates, alterations and changes.

Users of any version of ‘WebEdit’ will be eligible for all updates to the modules that they use, but not necessarily ‘new’ modules (purely for compatibility reasons).
